Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever dies without having fought (in the cause of Allah) or having thought of fighting (in the cause of Allah) will die while having one of the qualities of hypocrisy.”
Narrated by MuslimAny man who dies although he was capable of fighting in the cause of Allah but neither fought nor had the intention to do so, has something of hypocrisy. The intention is proved by preparing the gear needed for fighting. Allah, the Almighty, says: {And if they had intended to go forth, they would have made some preparation for it} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 46]. Whoever dies in this state is similar to the hypocrites and laggers who do not take part in Jihad. Since whoever imitates a category of people does belong to them, therefore every believer must have the intention of making Jihad.
Sa‘īd ibn Zayd reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is killed in defense of his wealth is a martyr. Whoever is killed in defense of his family, himself, or his religion is a martyr."
Narrated by At-Termedhy - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by AhmadThis Hadīth indicates that if a person is attacked by a thief or a usurper who tries to take his property forcefully without legal basis, then he has the right to fight the intruder in defense of his property. If he is killed while defending his property, he will be a martyr in the sight of Allah, the Exalted, and he will be given the same reward as that of martyrs. However, this does not mean that he should be treated like a person who is killed in a battlefield in the sense that his dead body should not be washed. Likewise, the same applies to a person who dies while defending himself or his honor against a person who wants to violate the honor of his wife or Mahrams. Such a person will be given the reward of martyrs by Allah, the Exalted. This Hadīth is a primary evidence for jurists in juristic issues known as repelling the intruder or attacker.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Strive against the polytheists with your properties, souls, and tongues."
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded striving against the disbelievers and putting forth every effort in facing them using all available means, according to their ability, so that the word of Allah be supreme. This includes: First: Spending money on making Jihad against them through buying weapons, providing for the fighters, etc. Second: Going forth with one's self and body to confront them and overcome them. Third: Inviting them to Islam through verbal means, establishing proof against them, rebuking them, and refuting their claims.
Ā'idh ibn ‘Amr al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam is to prevail and is not to be prevailed over."
Al-Bayhaqi - Narrated by Ad-DaraqutnyThis Hadīth constitutes one of the great foundations of Islam. It states that Allah, the Almighty, has decreed that this religion is superior and that its followers will always prevail and occupy a high status so long as they adhere to it. This is a statement which, in fact, implies a command, just like the Qur'anic verse in which Allah, the Almighty, said: {So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers} [Sūrat Āl-‘Imrān: 139]. This Hadīth has a general indication, meaning that it applies under all circumstances. Scholars of Fiqh rely on it as evidence in many cases and rulings; for example, it applies in the context of Jizyah. Dhimmis (non-Muslim subjects living in the Muslim state), who pay Jizyah and live among Muslims, are not allowed to make their church bells heard or their crosses seen, or to erect buildings that are taller than those of the Muslims. Also, if either parent embraces Islam, the child becomes a Muslim, following the better of the parents' religions (which is Islam), and it is forbidden for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man. Similarly, any ruling that entails supremacy of Islam must be given priority.
Salmān al-Fārisi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Observing Ribāt (guarding the Muslim frontiers) for a day and a night is better than fasting and standing for night prayer for a whole month. If a person dies (while performing Ribāt), he will receive the reward for his righteous deeds perpetually, will receive his provision, and will be saved from the trials of the grave."
Narrated by MuslimGuarding the borders of Muslim lands for a day and a night protecting Muslims (from their enemies) is better than fasting for a month and standing for night prayer for a month. If a Muslim dies while in Ribāt in the cause of Allah, the reward for his good deeds will continue to be added to his account and not stopped. He will receive provision from Paradise, because he is alive in the Paradise of his Lord and will also enjoy the special privilege of being spared the questioning in the grave by the two angels, because he died while being on guard in the cause of Allah. It is worth noting that Ribāt is a part of Jihad in the cause of Allah, because it means staying at the borders to protect the Muslims from the disbelievers.
Fadālah ibn ‘Ubayd, Salmān Al-Fārisi, and ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Āmir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The actions of every dead person come to a halt except the one who is garrisoned on the frontier in the way of Allah. His deeds will keep growing till the Day of Judgment, and he will be secure from the trial in the grave."
Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by AhmadThe deeds of any person will end by his death, and no more rewards will be put in his record, except for the one who is garrisoned in the cause of Allah, guarding the Muslim borders. Honoring such a person, Allah the Almighty makes the reward of his deeds ongoing and keeps him safe from the trial in the grave; thus, he will not be questioned by the two angels.
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah, the Almighty, gathers together (on the Day of Judgment) all the earlier and later generations of mankind, a banner will be raised for every betrayer, and it will be said: 'This is the betrayal of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so.'"
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimWhen Allah gathers together all the earlier and later generations on the Day of Resurrection, every betrayer will be brought up with a sign of his/her betrayal. This sign, which will take a form of a banner accompanying the betrayer, will disclose one's betrayal and brings him/her disgrace among people.
Salamah ibn al-Akwa‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A spy from among the polytheists came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was on a journey. The spy stayed with the Prophet's Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and talked to them, and then he left. Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Go in pursuit of him and kill him.' I killed him, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave me his belongings (as an extra share)." According to another Hadīth, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who killed the spy?" They (the Companions) said: "Ibn al-Akwa‘." He said: "All the belongings of the killed man are for him (Salamah)."
Narrated by Muslim - Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimThis Hadīth highlights the Islamic ruling on a person who spies over the Muslims while he is one of the combatant disbelievers. Salamah ibn Al-Akwa‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A spy from among the polytheists came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." The Arabic version of the Hadīth uses the word "‘ayn" (eye) in reference to the spy because the act of spying depends upon the eye, and because a spy is mainly concerned with and focused on watching, as if his whole body has become an eye. "The spy stayed with the Prophet's Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and talked with them and then went away. Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Pursue and kill him.' So, I killed him." Here, Salamah says that he pursued the spy, caught him, and killed him. "And the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave me his belongings (as an extra share)." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave Salamah all the belongings of the man, including clothes, weapons, riding mount, and its saddle, along with all the money, gold, and silver which the killed person had.
‘Abdullāh ibn Abu Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) during one of the days wherein he met the enemy, waited until the sun had declined. Thereafter, he stood up among them and said: "O people, do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety. And if you meet them, have patience and know that Paradise lies under the shadows of swords." Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Mover of the Clouds, Defeater of the Armies, Defeat them and help us against them!"
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimThe Companion ‘Abdullāh ibn Abu Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) informs in this Hadīth that when the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessing be upon him) met the enemy one day, he waited and did not begin the fighting except after the sun had declined, after which he stood up among them to deliver a speech, something which is usually done after prayer. He prohibited them from wishing to meet the enemy, given the self-conceit involved in this desire, and instructed them to ask Allah, the Almighty, for safety. Thereafter, he said: “And if you meet them, have patience.” In other words, if Allah wills this to happen and you are tested with meeting the enemy, show patience and do not panic; and know that you will get one of two good things: either Allah will help you against your enemy and make you victorious over them, and thus you will win both the victory in the worldly life and the reward in the Hereafter; or you will be defeated after you have tried your best in Jihad, and you will thus have the reward in the Hereafter. “And know that Paradise lies under the shadows of swords”, meaning: Jihad leads to Paradise. Then, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) invoked his Lord by His Shariah and perfect power to grant the Muslims victory over their enemies. And success can only be attained through Allah, the Almighty.
