Abu ‘Abdullāh Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We complained to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was lying in the shade of the Ka‘bah, placing his cloak under his head. We said: "Will you not supplicate for our victory (over our opponents)? Will you not invoke Allah for us?" He replied: "Among those who came before you, a man would be seized and held in a pit dug for him in the ground, and he would be sawed into two halves from his head, and his flesh would be torn away from his bones with iron combs, and none of this would turn him away from his religion. By Allah, Allah will bring this matter (Islam) to its completion until the traveler will walk from Sana'a to Hadramaut fearing none except Allah and the wolf for his sheep, but you are rushing things." In another narration: "Having made a pillow from his cloak, and we had faced much persecution from the polytheists."
Narrated by BukhariIn this Hadīth, Khabbāb (may Allah be pleased with him) tells the story of the suffering that the Muslims faced from the disbelievers of the Quraysh in Makkah. They came complaining to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was lying in the shade of the Ka‘bah placing his head on his cloak. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explained that those who lived before us experienced severer trials regarding their religion. A pit would be dug for one of them and he would be thrown into it; then a saw would be brought to the top of his head and he would be sawed into two halves; and his flesh would be torn away from his bones with iron combs, which was extreme suffering. Then he swore that Allah, the Almighty, would complete this matter, meaning that He would complete the message of Islam that the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had brought. This would be done in such a way that the one traveling from Sana'a to Hadramaut would fear none except Allah and the wolf for his sheep. Then he guided his noble Companions to stop rushing things, saying: "But you are rushing things," meaning: have patience and await relief from Allah, for Allah will surely complete this matter, and things went just as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) swore they would go.
Abu Qatādah and Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, I would stand up for (congregational) prayer intending to prolong it, but I hear the crying of an infant, so I shorten my prayer lest I make it burdensome for his mother."
Narrated by Bukhari - Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimThe Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would start leading a congregational prayer intending to make the prayer long. However, if he heard an infant crying, he would shorten the prayer so that it would not be hard on the infant's mothers, since her heart would be distracted by the crying of her child.
‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: Some Bedouins visited the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and they said: "Do you kiss your children?" He said: 'Yes.' They said: "By Allah we do not kiss our children." Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what can I do if Allah has removed mercy from your hearts?"
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimSome Bedouins came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and (during their visit) they asked him: "Do you kiss your children?" The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) replied: 'Yes.' Bedouins are normally harsh and rigorous, so they said: "We never kiss our children." So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: If Allah has removed mercy from your hearts, I would not be able to put it in them.
‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: One early morning, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went out wearing a garment with a pattern of camel saddles (or a pattern of stripes) on it, made of black hair.
Narrated by MuslimThe Mother of the Believers ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) described some of the clothing of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying that one early morning he came out to his Companions wearing a garment that had images of camel saddles on it made from black hair - or a garment with a pattern of stripes like that in the saddle.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) eating some dates while sitting on his buttocks with his knees bent upwards.
Narrated by MuslimAnas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) eating some dates while sitting with his buttocks on the ground and his knees bent upwards. He sat that way so as not to eat much, because in this position one is not sitting comfortably so he does not eat much.
Abu Rimthah At-Taymi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wearing two green garments.
Narrated by At-Termedhy - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by Ahmad - Ad-DaarimiAbu Rimthah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that he saw the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wearing green garments.
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Wisāl (continuous fasting for two days). So they said to him: "But you practice Wisāl!" He said: "I am not like you. I am provided with food and drink (by my Lord)." The narration reported by Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reads: "... so whoever of you wishes to practice Wisāl, let him do so until the pre-dawn time.”
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimThe Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessing be upon him) forbade his Companions from Wisāl out of mercy and compassion for them. However, the Companions, out of their love for virtuous deeds and their eagerness to perform deeds that would bring them closer to Allah, wished to practice the Wisāl fast, following the example of the Prophet. They said to him: But you practice Wisāl! So he informed them that he was given (by Allah) what compensates his need for food and drink. He added that whoever wants to continuously fast, then he may do so until the time before dawn. The Islamic Shariah is tolerant and easy and is free of whatever causes hardship and distress, and is also free of extremism and excess, because that would entail torture and exhaustion of the self, and Allah does not charge a soul except with that within its capacity. This is also because ease and facilitation encourage the continuity of deeds and ward off boredom. Moreover, they emphasize the justice that Allah has placed on earth, which is giving Allah what He demands of worship while giving the self its essential needs.
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The garment that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) liked most was the Qamīs (long shirt).
Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by AhmadThe garment that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) liked most was the Qamīs (long shirt) because it covers the body better than the Izār and Ridā'. Also, because it is one piece and thus easier to wear. However, if you are in a country where people are used to wearing Izār and Ridā' and you dress like them, there is no harm in that. The important thing is to not oppose the style of the people of the country, thereby becoming famous for it. Indeed, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing garment for fame and vanity.
Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand by the trunk of a date-palm tree while delivering the sermon. When a pulpit was placed in the mosque, we heard the trunk crying out like a pregnant she-camel until the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and placed his hand over it and it became quiet. In another narration: "On Friday, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit, so the date palm tree that he used to stand by while delivering the sermon cried out until it almost split asunder." In a third narration: "... so it cried like a child, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) descended (from the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued moaning like a child being quietened until it calmed down. He said: 'It was crying for (missing) what it used to hear of Dhikr near it.’"
Narrated by BukhariThe Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took a trunk as a pulpit, and when he replaced it, he heard the sound and crying of that trunk over the Dhikr it used to hear. So, the Prophet descended and put his hand over it, and it calmed as a result. In another narration: "He descended and took it in his arms, and this took place during the Friday sermon."
