سورة البقرة
line

And We have certainly revealed to you verses [which are] clear proofs, and no one would deny them except the defiantly disobedient.

Abu ‘Atiyyah reported: I and Masrūq went to ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Masrūq said to her: "There are two of the Companions of Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who never stop to pursue the good; but one of them hastens to perform the Maghrib prayer and break the fast, while the other delays the Maghrib prayer and breaking the fast." She said: "Who hastens to perform the Maghrib prayer and break the fast?" He said: '‘Abdullāh', meaning: Ibn Mas‘ūd. She said: "This is what the Messenger of Allah used to do."

line

Abu ‘Atiyyah and Masrūq asked ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who was right among two of the Companions of Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him); the one who hastened to perform the Maghrib prayer and break the fast when the time comes, or the one who delayed the Maghrib prayer and breaking the fast. ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked who was the one who would hasten to perform the Maghrib prayer and break the fast. The answer was ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him). Then she noted that this – hastening to pray the Maghrib and break the fast – is what the Messenger of Allah used to do. Thus, this is a practical Sunnah of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings upon him) which shows that it is better to hasten to break the fast.

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to strive to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.

Narrated by Ibn Majah - Narrated by At-Termedhy - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Ahmad
line

The Mother of the Believers ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to strive to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. This is because deeds are presented before Allah, the Exalted, on these two days, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would love to have his deeds presented while he was fasting, and because Allah, the Exalted, would forgive the sins of every Muslim , except those who are quarreling with each other during these two days, as reported in other Hadīths.

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to break his fast before praying by having three fresh dates. If there were no fresh dates, he would have dried dates; and if there were no dried dates, he would drink a few sips of water.

Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by Ahmad
line

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to break his fast by eating fresh dates before the Maghrib prayer. However, when fresh dates were not available, he would have dried dates; and if there were no dried dates, he would drink a few sips of water. Having dates or water before eating is suitable because the stomach of a fasting person is empty, so he does not start with rich food as this may harm him.

Abu Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts one day in the cause of Allah, Allah shall put between him and Hellfire a trench as wide as the distance between the heavens and the earth."

Narrated by At-Termedhy
line

This Hadīth demonstrates the virtue of fasting a day solely for the sake of Allah. The reward for this is that Allah saves the fasting person from Hellfire and keeps him away from it at a distance equal to that between the heavens and the earth.

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you fast three days of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth." Qatādah ibn Milhān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) used to order us to fast the White Days: the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth (of every lunar month)." Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) never broke his fast on the White Days, whether he was a resident or a traveler.”

Narrated by Ibn Majah
line

Abu Dharr reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you fast”, O Abu Dharr. His statement, “of the month”, means any month. “Three (days)”, means you intended it voluntarily, “then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth”, means fast the 13th of the month and the two following days. These days are called the White Days – days of the white nights – because of their illumination by the full moon, and fasting them every month is recommended. Ibn ‘Abbās reported: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) never broke his fast on the White Days”, meaning the days of white nights, which are the 13th, 14th, and 15th, because they are lit up with the full moon from their beginning until their end, so fasting them is appropriate in gratitude to Allah, Exalted. His statement, “whether he was a resident or traveler” means that he adhered to fasting them in both cases. So, fasting such days is a confirmed act of Sunnah. It is more likely that his fasting the White Days is due to their being in the middle of the month, and the middle of anything is the most balanced part of it.

Mu‘ādhah al-‘Adawiyah reported that she asked ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): “Did the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) fast three days of each month?” ‘Ā’ishah replied: 'Yes.' Mu‘ādhah asked: “In which part of the month did he fast?” ‘Ā’ishah replied: “It did not matter to him in which part of the month he fasted.”

Mu‘ādhah al-‘Adawiyah reported that she asked ‘Ā’ishah: “Did the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) fast three days of each month?” ‘Ā’ishah replied: 'Yes.' i.e. this is the least number of days that he fasted. Mu‘ādhah further asked: “Which days of the month (or week) did he fast?” i.e. those three days were from the beginning, the middle or the end of the month, and were they consecutive or separate? ‘Ā’ishah replied: “It did not matter to him…” i.e. He did not specify certain days of the month to fast, because the reward is granted with fasting any three days. This means that he fasted according to what he deemed convenient, since something might come up and prevent him from observing fasting, or perhaps he did it to show in a practical manner what is permissible, and either of these reasons is excellent concerning his right and status.

Safiyyah bint Huyai (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was once observing I‘tikāf, so I went to visit him at night. We talked for a while then I got up to leave. He got up with me to escort me - her dwelling was in the house of Usāmah ibn Zayd. Two men from the Ansār passed by. When they saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) they quickened their pace, so he said to them: "Slow down. This is Safiyyah bint Huyai (my wife)." They said: "Subhān Allah! O Messenger of Allah," meaning: You are far above any suspicion. He said: "The devil circulates in the son of Adam like blood. I feared lest he should cast evil thoughts in your hearts (or he said: would cast something in your hearts)." Another narration reads: "Safiyyah came to visit him while he was observing I‘tikāf in the mosque during the last ten nights of Ramadan. So she stayed to talk to him for some time then got up to leave. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) got up to escort her until she reached the door of the mosque near Umm Salāmah's door..." Then the rest of the narration was reported with the same meaning.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was observing I‘tikāf during the last ten nights of Ramadan. His wife, Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) visited him one of those nights and talked to him for some time. Then she got up to go back home, so the Prophet got up with her to escort her and keep her company. Two men from the Ansār walked by, and when they saw the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) they sped up out of shyness when they saw his wife with him. So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Slow down for this is only my wife Safiyyah. The two men said in embarrassment: Subhān Allah! Is it even conceivable that someone might have suspicions about you (i.e. suspecting that the woman with him was not his wife)? In reply, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed them that the devil is keen on luring the sons of Adam, and that he is highly capable of doing so, for he runs through their veins just like blood given the subtle ways he sneaks into their hearts and minds. Therefore, he feared that the devil might cast suspicions in their hearts.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Monday and Thursday. So, I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting." Another narration reads: “Gates of Paradise are opened on Mondays and Thursdays, and every slave [of Allah] who associates nothing with Allah will be forgiven, except for a man who is at odds with his brother. It will be said: 'Delay these two until they are reconciled; delay these two until they are reconciled.'” Another narration reads: "Deeds are presented to Allah on every Monday and Thursday, and Allah will forgive every slave who does not associate anything with Allah in worship, except for a person who is at odds with his brother. He shall say: 'Leave these two until they are reconciled.’"

Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Muslim
line

"Deeds are presented", meaning: to Allah, the Almighty. “On Monday and Thursday. So, I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting”, meaning: out of seeking a higher reward from Allah. According to the second wording: "Gates of Paradise are opened on Mondays and Thursdays", it is true because Paradise has been already created. “And every slave [of Allah] who associates nothing with Allah will be forgiven”, meaning: only the minor sins will be forgive, while the major sins require a repentance. “Except for a man”, meaning: a person “who is at odds with his brother”, meaning: who is on bad terms with his brother in Islam. “It will be said: Delay”, meaning: Allah says this to the angels. “These two”, meaning: such two men who are in conflict. They will be delayed in order to deter them, or because of their sin of turning their backs on each other. “Until” such an enmity is removed and “they are reconciled.” This indicates that one must take the initiative to get rid of the grudge and animosity between him and his fellow Muslim brothers. He should do so even if this does not appeal to him. He should be patient and seek reward for doing this from Allah, the Almighty, because such an act results in a good end. It becomes easier for the person to do something if he realizes the good and reward it entails. Similarly, thinking of the warning against misdeeds makes it easy for the person to avoid committing such a bad act.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim woman to travel the distance of one night unless accompanied by a man who is a Mahram (non-marriageable male relative) to her."

Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim
line

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that it is unlawful for a Muslim woman to travel a distance of one night unless accompanied by a man from her Mahrams.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka la sharīka laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wa an-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharīka lak." (O Allah, I respond to Your call, I do respond. I respond to Your call, You have no partner, I do respond. Verily, praise, blessing, and sovereignty belong to You; You have no partner) He said: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) used to add: Labbayka labbayka, wa sa‘dayka, wa al-khayru biyadayk. Labbayka wa ar-raghbā’u ilayka wa al-‘amal (I respond to Your call, I respond to Your call, and I ask You to make me happy.) Goodness is in Your Hands. I respond to Your call, and to You belong desires and actions).

Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim
line

The Talbiyah of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), when intending to start the rituals of Hajj or ‘Umrah, was to say: (O Allah, I respond to Your call, I do respond) duly time and again regarding what You have called us to, including sincerity, monotheism, Hajj, and others. (I respond to Your call, You have no partner, I do respond) for You alone are worthy of worship, and You have no partner in Your lordship, worship, names, and attributes.) (Verily, praise), gratitude, commendation, and (blessing) are from You, and You are the One Who gives them; (to You) they are directed in all circumstances, (and sovereignty) also belongs to You. (You have no partner), as they all belong to You alone. Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) used to add: (I respond to Your call, I respond to Your call, and I ask You to make me happy), i.e., make me happy time and again. (Goodness is in Your Hands) all of it and out of Your grace. (I respond to Your call and to You belong desires), requests, and demands, i.e., to the One in Whose Hands goodness lies (and actions), as You are the One worthy of worship.
