﴿ لِّنُحۡـِۧيَ بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةٗ مَّيۡتٗا وَنُسۡقِيَهُۥ مِمَّا خَلَقۡنَآ أَنۡعَٰمٗا وَأَنَاسِيَّ كَثِيرٗا

سورة الفرقان

That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men.

﴿ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.

﴿ قُلۡ إِنَّ رَبِّي يَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَقۡدِرُ لَهُۥۚ وَمَآ أَنفَقۡتُم مِّن شَيۡءٖ فَهُوَ يُخۡلِفُهُۥۖ وَهُوَ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ

سورة سبأ

Say, “My Lord extends provision to whom He wills of His slaves or restricts it. Whatever you spend in charity, He will compensate for it, for He is the Best of Providers.”

﴿ وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَٱخۡتَلَفُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتُۚ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٞ

سورة آل عمران

And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment

﴿ وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَن نُّؤۡمِنَ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ وَلَا بِٱلَّذِي بَيۡنَ يَدَيۡهِۗ وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰٓ إِذِ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ مَوۡقُوفُونَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ يَرۡجِعُ بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ يَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسۡتُضۡعِفُواْ لِلَّذِينَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ لَوۡلَآ أَنتُمۡ لَكُنَّا مُؤۡمِنِينَ

31. And those who disbelieve say: "We believe not in this Qur’ân nor in that which was before it." But if you could see when the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) will be made to stand before their Lord, how they will cast the (blaming) word one to another! Those who were deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant: "Had it not been for you, we should certainly have been believers!"

﴿ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

14. Such shall be the dwellers of Paradise, abiding therein (forever) - a reward for what they used to do.

﴿ فَأَرَدۡنَآ أَن يُبۡدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُ زَكَوٰةٗ وَأَقۡرَبَ رُحۡمٗا

81. "So we intended that their Lord should change him for them for one better in righteousness and nearer to mercy.

﴿ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَإِذَا كَانُواْ مَعَهُۥ عَلَىٰٓ أَمۡرٖ جَامِعٖ لَّمۡ يَذۡهَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يَسۡتَـٔۡذِنُوهُۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَـٔۡذِنُونَكَ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۚ فَإِذَا ٱسۡتَـٔۡذَنُوكَ لِبَعۡضِ شَأۡنِهِمۡ فَأۡذَن لِّمَن شِئۡتَ مِنۡهُمۡ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمُ ٱللَّهَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ

The true believers are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger. When they are with him on a public matter, they do not leave until they ask his permission. Those who ask your permission are the ones who believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for a private matter, give permission to whom you will from among them, and ask Allah’s forgiveness for them, for Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

﴿ إِن تُبۡدُواْ ٱلصَّدَقَٰتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِيَۖ وَإِن تُخۡفُوهَا وَتُؤۡتُوهَا ٱلۡفُقَرَآءَ فَهُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡۚ وَيُكَفِّرُ عَنكُم مِّن سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرٞ

سورة البقرة

If you give charity publicly, it is good; but if you give it secretly to the poor, it is better for you[168], and He will expiate some of your sins. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

﴿ رَّبَّنَا ٱكۡشِفۡ عَنَّا ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤۡمِنُونَ

[They will cry,] “Our Lord, remove the punishment from us; we will surely believe!”

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a speech the like of which I never heard before. He said: "Paradise and Hellfire were presented to me, and I have never seen good and evil like what I saw today. If you knew what I know, you will rarely laugh and you will cry abundantly." In another narration: ''The Messenger of Allah was told of something about his Companions. So he gave a speech, in which he said: Paradise and Hell were presented to me, and I have never seen good and evil like what I saw today. If you knew what I know, you will rarely laugh and you will cry abundantly." The Companions had never had a harder day. They covered their heads, crying and sobbing.''

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave his Companions an admonishment that they never heard before. He told them that Paradise and Hellfire were presented to him, and he never saw of details of good and evil as he saw that day. He also said that if they knew what he knew about the major events of the afterlife, including the bliss of Paradise and the torment of Hellfire they would rarely laugh and cry abundantly and profusely. The Companions had never a harder day; they wept severely.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning the verse: {You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind} [Sūrat Āl-‘Imrān: 110]: He said: ''The best people to people are those who bring them with chains in their necks until they enter Islam.'' He also reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, Glorified and Exalted, wonders at those people who will enter Paradise in chains.”

Allah, Glorified and Exalted, wonders at some people who are led to Paradise in chains. They were from the disbelievers whom the Muslims took as captives in Jihad. Then they embraced Islam, and thus their conversion led them to Paradise. The second Hadīth explains the first Hadīth, which is a Mawqūf report. According to the tradition narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), those who took the captives belong to the best nation that was brought out to people, for they were the reason behind the guidance of those captives. He started his speech with the noble verse, for it demonstrates the goodness of the Muslim Ummah.

Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two gardens, the utensils and the contents of which are of silver; two other gardens, the utensils and the contents of which are of gold. Nothing will prevent people from looking at their Lord except the veil of pride over His Face in the Garden of Eden.”

This Hadīth indicates the different degrees and levels in Paradise; some of which are higher than others literally and metaphorically. While some parts are built in gold, others will be in silver. Granted, gold is the most valuable metal for those addressed with the Qur'an when it was revealed. It is possible that Paradise has things more precious than gold, because Allah, the Almighty, said that Paradise contains things that have never been seen, heard of, or imagined. At the beginning of some narrations of this Hadīth, it is mentioned: “The gardens of Firdaus are four: two of gold...” The rest of the Hadīth indicates that nothing will prevent people from looking at their Lord except the veil of pride over His Face in the Garden of Eden. This is a clear indication that people will see Allah. If Allah wants to bless them with more honor, He will lift the veil of divine pride from His face to let them see Him. Followers of the Sunnah affirm that Allah has a veil of pride, and that the believers will see their Lord in Paradise, without explaining how, drawing similarities, and without distorting the texts or excluding their indications. Likewise, they affirm that Allah has a face that fits His majesty. It is not permissible to interpret any of these concepts, or deviate them from their apparent indications. This is the belief of the righteous predecessors.

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In Paradise there is a tree that the rider of a lean swift horse cannot cover (its distance) in one hundred years." Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A rider walks in its shade one hundred years without crossing it."

This Hadīth indicates the expansiveness of Paradise and its great bliss. It describes the trees of Paradise and their shade. One is so huge that a swift horse rider cannot reach its end. This indicates the great blessing that Allah has prepared for His obedient slaves.

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Verily, in Paradise there is a market to which people will come every Friday. The north wind will blow and scatter fragrances on their faces and clothes, increasing them in charm and beauty. Then they will return to their families, having increased in charm and beauty, and their families will say to them: 'By Allah, you have increased in charm and beauty!' They will then say: 'And by Allah, you too have increased in charm and beauty after us!'”

The Hadīth informs us about the types of bliss that the dwellers of Paradise will be honored with, and what they will find of beauty and delight ages after ages. It also tells us about what will be established for them in Paradise from meetings and markets and things like that as a sort of entertainment for them. Moreover, they will enjoy renewable and increasing beauty which is matchless and unparalleled.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any Muslim who loses (to death) three children before reaching puberty will be admitted by Allah into Paradise because of his being merciful to them."

If a Muslim loses three small children, whether they were male or female, before they reach the age of puberty, then that will be a reason for the parent to enter Paradise.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Almighty, said: 'I have prepared for My righteous slaves what no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard, and no human heart has ever conceived,' and recite if you wish: {And no soul knows what delight awaits them as the reward for their deeds.} [Sūrat As-Sajdah: 17]" Sahl ibn Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I witnessed a gathering wherein the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) described Paradise until the end, then he said at the end of his speech: "Therein is what no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard, and no human heart has ever conceived." Then he recited: {They arise from [their] beds ... no soul knows what delight awaits them.} [Sūrat As-Sajdah: 16-17]"

Meaning of the Hadīth: Allah, the Exalted, has prepared for His righteous slaves – those who fulfilled His commands and avoided His prohibitions – "What no eye has ever seen" of astonishing beauty and attractions and "no ear has ever heard" of delightful sounds and amazing descriptions. The sight and hearing were specifically mentioned because they are the means to realizing most of what is perceptible, followed by taste and smell, whereas touching comes at the end. "And no human heart has ever conceived;" meaning: of the everlasting delight that has been prepared for them in Paradise. Paradise is better than anything that they can imagine or dream of, because humans can only imagine what they know and is close to their imagination. The bliss of Paradise is far above that, and this is one of the ways in which Allah honors them for fulfilling His commands and avoiding His prohibitions, as well as for suffering in the cause of Allah. Indeed the reward is from the same type of the deed. "Recite if you wish," and in another narration: "Then he recited this verse: {And no soul knows what delight awaits them as the reward for their deeds.} [Sūrat As-Sajdah: 17]" The meaning of "No soul knows" includes all the souls of all creatures, since it is an unspecified negation. That is to say: no one knows {what delight awaits them} from abundant good, delight, happiness, and joy. For just as they used to pray at night, supplicate, and hide their good deeds, He will reward them with the same type of deed by hiding their reward, and that is why He said: {as the reward for their deeds.}

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman was tormented because of a cat which she had kept locked up until it died, and she was thrown into Hell for that. She neither gave it food or drink when she locked it up nor freed it so that it would eat from the vermin of the earth."

In this Hadīth, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told about a woman who was thrown into Hell – we seek refuge with Allah from it – because of a cat which she kept locked up until it died. She neither provided it with food and water while keeping it locked up, nor let it eat from the insects of the earth. If this is the punishment for doing this to animals, so how severe would it be in relation to the human being whose life is inviolable under Shariah, and whom Allah placed under one's care, like the wife, children, servants, etc.?!

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever Allah saves from the evil of what is between his jaws and the evil of what is between his legs will enter Paradise."

The person whom Allah, the Almighty, protects from saying what incurs His wrath and from committing adultery has been saved and will enter Paradise.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Paradise and Hellfire argued with each other (each claiming to be better than the other). Paradise said: ‘The weak and poor will enter me.’ Hellfire said: ‘The tyrants and arrogant will enter me.’ He said to Hellfire: ‘You are My punishment with which I will exact revenge upon whomever I wish.’ Then He said to Paradise: ‘You are My mercy with which I will show mercy to whomever I wish.’”

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that Paradise and Hellfire argued before their Lord, meaning that each of them presented the proofs of its superiority, each claiming to be better than the other. This is one of the matters of the unseen which we must believe in even if our minds deem it unlikely. Paradise argued with Hellfire, saying that the weak and poor from mankind will be in it, for most of them are those who incline towards the truth and submit to it. Then Hellfire argued that the tyrants – who are stern and harsh – will be in it, as well as the arrogant – who are haughty, proud, despise others and deny the truth. The tyrant and arrogant are the inhabitants of Hellfire – Allah’s refuge is sought – because most of the time they do not submit to the truth. Then Allah, the Almighty, judged between them, saying to Hellfire: You are My punishment with which I will punish whomever I wish, and will exact revenge upon whomever I wish. Then He said to Paradise: You are My mercy with which I will show mercy to whomever I wish, meaning that it is the abode that was created out of the mercy of Allah. It is not His mercy that is one of His permanent attributes, rather, the mercy mentioned here is a creature. ‘You are My mercy’ means ‘I created you from My mercy, and with you I will show mercy to whomever I wish.’ The inhabitants of Paradise are the people of Allah’s mercy, whereas the inhabitants of Hellfire are the people of Allah’s punishment.
