But honour, power and glory belong to Allâh, and to His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not.

47. Ibrâhîm (Abraham) said: "Peace be on you! I will ask Forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily He is unto me Ever Most Gracious.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Between the two Blows (of the Trumpet), there will be (an interval of) forty." The people said: "O Abu Hurayrah, do you mean forty days?" He said: "I cannot say anything." They said: "Do you mean forty years?" He said: "I cannot say anything." They said: "Do you mean forty months?" He said: "I cannot say anything." (The Prophet added) "Everything of the human body will perish except the end of the coccyx (tailbone), and from that part, Allah will reconstruct the whole body. Then Allah will send down water from the sky, and the people will grow like green vegetables."

The great Companion Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say that the period between the first blow of the Trumpet, which will cause the people to die, and the second blow, after which they will be resurrected, will be forty. Abu Hurayrah was asked: Forty what: days, months, or years? He refused to reply, as he had not heard a specification for this number from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned that Allah, the Exalted, will send down rain as thick as men's semen, and from this rain, the people will grow in their graves as seeds grow after a flood. Then the people will be resurrected to their Lord on the Day of Reckoning.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He who has wronged his brother, concerning his honor or anything else, let him ask for his pardon today before there comes a time when there will be neither a dinar nor a dirham. If he has good deeds, an amount equivalent to the wrong he has done will be taken from his good deeds (and given to the one whom he has wronged). If he has no good deeds, then some of that person's bad deeds will be taken and loaded upon him."

This Hadīth describes one of the aspects of social justice which Islam is keen to spread among its followers. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He who has wronged his brother": the term “brother” here means a brother in Islam. Wronging one’s brother takes several forms including violating his honor or anything else related to him. "concerning his honor": honor refers to all that a person is keen to protect and rejects its defamation, like his life, his lineage, and family reputation. "or anything else": any other type of wronging such as taking his money or preventing him from utilizing it. This may also be a form of generalization of speech after specifying it. "let him ask for his pardon today": he should ask the one whom he has wronged to forgive him for his wrongdoing. To indicate the urgency of the matter, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said 'today', meaning the days of the worldly life. He then refers to the opposite of the worldly life by saying "before there is no dinar or dirham"; i.e. on the Day of Judgment. He is thus urging the Muslim to seek the pardon of the person whom he has wronged, even if he would have to spend much money (dinar or dirham) to achieve that. That is because the loss of money in the worldly life is much easier than the loss of one’s good deeds or bearing the bad deeds of another (in case he has no good deeds to be given to the one whom he has wronged) in the Hereafter. "If he has good deeds, an amount equivalent to the wrong he has done will be taken and given to his brother. If he has no good deeds, then some of the bad deeds of the one whom he has wronged will be taken and loaded upon him." This is the case when the wrongdoer is a believer who is not pardoned by the one whom he has wronged. The amount that will be taken from him is determined by Allah in proportion to the wrong he did. Knowledge of such obedience and sinfulness in quantity and quality is referred to Allah, the Exalted, alone. However, if the wrongdoer was bankrupt of all good deeds on the Day of Reckoning, then, as told by the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) he will be subject to a harsh reckoning that will burden him and increase his punishment; some of the bad deeds of the person whom he wronged will be transferred to the wrongdoer.

‘Ā'ishah, the Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised." I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, men and women together, looking at each other?!" He replied: "O ‘Ā'ishah, the situation will be too grave for them to be concerned with that." Another narration reads: "The situation will be too serious for them to be looking at each other."

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that she heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: Allah will gather the people on the Day of Judgment barefooted without footwear, and with no clothes on and uncircumcised. They will come out of their graves as the day their mothers gave birth to them. ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said (in astonishment): O Messenger of Allah, men and women, naked, looking at one another?! He said: O ‘Ā'ishah, the situation will be too serious and too hard for them to care about that, or to look at one another.

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “People will rise from their graves and stand before the Lord of the Worlds. An-Nawwās ibn Sam‘ān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessing be upon him) mentioned the Anti-Christ one morning, (sometimes describing him) to be insignificant and at other times important, till we thought that he might be amidst a cluster of date-palms. We departed from the presence of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) but returned shortly after. He noticed that (concern) in us. So he said: "What is the matter with you?" We said: "O Messenger of Allah, you mentioned the Anti-Christ this morning, belittling him and mentioning his importance, till we thought that he might be amidst a cluster of the date-palms." He said: "It is not the Anti-Christ that I fear for you; if he were to appear while I am in the midst of you, then I will be his adversary on your behalf. And if he appears while I am not among you, then each man will have to fend for himself. Allah will take care of every Muslim after me. He is young, with curly hair, and his eyes protruding. I compare him to ‘Abd al-‘Uzza ibn Qatān. If anyone of you sees him, let him recite the initial verses of Sūrat al-Kahf. He will appear from what is between the Levant and Iraq, causing devastation toward the right and toward the left. O worshipers of Allah! Hold fast!" We said: "O Messenger of Allah, how long will he linger on the earth?" He said: "Forty days, a day like a year, a day like a month, a day like a week, and the remainder of his days are like your days." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you think that during the day that is like a year, the prayer of one day will be sufficient for us?" He said: "No; you will have to estimate it." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, how fast will he move on the earth?" He said: "Like a rain storm driven by the wind. He will come upon a people and call them, and they will deny him and reject his claims. Then he will leave them, and their wealth will follow him. They will awaken in the morning with nothing left. Then he will come upon a people and call them, and they will respond to him, believing in him. So he will order the heavens to bring rain, and it will rain, and he will order the land to sprout, and it will sprout. Their cattle will return to them with their coats the longest, their udders the fullest, and their stomachs the fattest. Then he will come upon some ruins, saying to it: ‘Bring me your treasures!’ He will turn to leave it, and it will follow him like drone bees. Then he will call a young man, full of youth, and he will strike him with the sword, cutting him into two pieces. Then he will call him, and he will come forward with his face beaming and laughing. So while he is doing that, ‘Īsa, the son of Mariyam (peace be upon him), will descend in eastern Damascus at the white minaret, wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, drops fall of it, and when raises it, gems like pearls drop from him. His breath will not reach any disbeliever but that he will die, and his breath will reach as far as his sight. So he will pursue him (the Anti-Christ) and will catch up with him at the gate of Ludd, where he will kill him. Then people whom Allah will have protected will come to ‘Īsa, the son of Mariyam, and he will wipe their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise, it will be under such conditions that Allah will reveal to him: ‘I have brought forth from among My slaves such people against whom none will be able to fight; you take these people safely to At-Tūr.’ Then Allah will send Gog and Magog, and they will swarm down from every mound. The first of them will pass by the lake of Tiberias and drink out of it. And when the last of them will pass, he will say: ‘There was once water there.’ ‘Īsa and his companions will then be besieged there (and they will be so hard pressed) that the head of an ox will be dearer to one of them than one hundred dinars is to one of you today. Prophet ‘Īsa and his companions will supplicate Allah, Who will send to them insects which will attack their (Gog and Magog) necks, and in the morning they will perish like one single person. Prophet ‘Īsa and his companions will then come down to the earth (from the mountain they were on), and they will not find on the earth as much space as a single span that is not filled with their putrefaction and stench. Prophet ‘Īsa and his companions will then again beseech Allah, Who will send birds whose necks will be like those of Bactrian camels, and they will carry them and throw them where Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain which no house of clay or hair will keep out, and it will wash the earth until it will appear like a mirror. Then the earth will be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing and, as a result thereof, a group of persons will be able to eat from one pomegranate and seek shelter under its skin, and a cow will give so much milk that a whole party will be able to drink it. And a camel will give so much milk that a whole tribe will be able to drink from it, and sheep will give so much milk that a whole family will be able to drink from it; and at that time, Allah will send a pleasant wind which will soothem even under their armpits, and it will take the life of every Muslim, and only the wicked people will survive, and they will commit adultery like monkeys, and those are the people to whom the Last Hour will come."

One of the major signs of the Hour is the emergence of the Anti-Christ, as reported in the Hadīth. This is one of the matters of the unseen in which we must believe exactly as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told about them. His characteristics were fully mentioned so that nothing of them would be hidden to any Muslim. Allah, the Exalted, endowed him with amazing and supernatural powers as a test for the people. He will pass by all parts of the globe save for Makkah and Madīnah. His end will be at the hands of Prophet ‘Īsa (peace be upon him). Then Gog and Magog will emerge and spread corruption all over the world. Their emergence is also one of the signs of the run-up to the Hour. Then Prophet ‘Īsa (peace be upon him) and the believers will implore Allah, the Exalted, till He saves them from these evil beings. Following these weighty events, the Hour will take place, as Allah will have taken the lives of His believing slaves. Thus, the Hour will come while only the most wicked people are left on earth.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Oxus, Jaxartes, Euphrates, and the Nile are all from the rivers of Paradise."

Narrated by Muslim
line

The Oxus, the Jaxartes, the Euphrates, and the Nile are four rivers in this world, which the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) described as being from the rivers of Paradise. Some scholars said that they are literally from the rivers of Paradise. However, when these rivers were put in this world, they earned the character of worldly rivers and became from the rivers of this world.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Paradise and Hell argued with one another. Hell said: ‘I have been assigned the arrogant and the tyrants.’ Paradise said: ‘Why is it that only the weak, the insignificant, and the simple enter me?’ Allah said to Paradise: ‘You are My Mercy by means of which I have mercy upon whomever I wish of My slaves.’ And He said to Hell: ‘You are My torment by means of which I torment whomever I wish of My slaves. Each of you will have its fill.’ As for Hell, it will not be filled until Allah, Blessed and Exalted, puts His Foot. It will say: ‘Enough, enough, enough!’ It will thus be filled, and its parts will come closer to each other. Indeed, Allah does not do injustice to any of His creatures. As for Paradise, Allah will create for it new creation (to fill it).”

Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim
line

This Hadīth reports a conversation between Hell and Paradise. Hell boasts of being the destination of Allah's vengeance on the tyrants, the arrogant, and criminals, who disobeyed Allah and discredited His messengers. Paradise, however, complains that mostly the weak, the poor, and the humble are admitted to it. The dwellers of Paradise are, indeed, humble and submissive to Allah. Paradise and Hell have, in fact, had such a conversation, since Allah has endowed them with consciousness, discernment, reason, and speech. Nothing is beyond Allah's power. Allah settled the dispute between Paradise and Hell by saying to the former that it is His mercy by means of which He has mercy upon any of His slaves, and by saying to the latter that it is His torment by means of which He tortures any of His slaves. In other words, Allah created Paradise to have mercy by means of which upon whom He wills of His slaves, namely those who are blessed by Allah and made eligible to be admitted to Paradise. Likewise, Allah created Hell for those who disobeyed Him, namely those who disbelieved in Him and His messengers. Both destinations belong to the dominion of Allah, which He manages as He wills. He is not asked about what He does, whereas people are asked. It should be noted, however, that no one enters Hell except those who deserve it because of their deeds. Furthermore, Allah promised to fill Paradise and Hell with dwellers. Hell clearly asked to be filled; Allah says: {On the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more?"} [Sūrat Qāf: 30] In response, Allah pledged to fill Hell with both jinn and humans. Paradise and Hell are the abodes of the jinn and humans after reckoning on Doomsday. Those who believed in Allah, worshiped Him alone, and followed His messengers, will end up residing in Paradise. On the other hand, those who disobeyed Allah and disbelieved in Him with arrogance, they will end up residing in Hell. However, Hell will be filled only when Allah puts His Foot. It will then get together and tighten upon those inside it. Indeed, Allah does not do injustice to anyone. The ''Foot'' must be affirmed as an attribute of Allah, without distorting its meaning, denying it, asking how, or drawing similarities between Allah and His creation. Finally, Allah, the Almighty, will fill Paradise with new creation that He will specially create for it.

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was told about a Hadīth from a man who heard it from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). So I bought a camel, prepared my baggage, and traveled for a month to reach him. I arrived at the Levant and found ‘Abdullāh ibn Unays. I said to the doorkeeper: "Tell him Jābir is at the door." He asked: "Ibn Abdullāh?" I said: ‘Yes.’ Unays came out, holding onto his garment and hugged me, and I hugged him too. I said: "I learnt that you heard a Hadīth about recompense from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and I was worried that you would die or I would die before hearing the Hadīth." So he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'People – or he said slaves - will be gathered on the Day of Judgment naked and uncircumcised, and having nothing.'" He continued: "Then they will be summoned by a voice that is heard from far and near: ‘I am the King, I am the Recompenser, and none of the people of Hell will enter Hell with a right over one of the people of Paradise until I settle his right. And none of the people of Paradise will enter Paradise owing a right to one of the people of Hell, until I offset his right, even if it was a slap (on the face).'" We said: “How could that be, when we come to Allah naked, uncircumcised and having nothing with us?” he said: “By the good and bad deeds."

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh al-Ansāri said he heard that ‘Abdullāh ibn Unays had heard a Hadīth from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) that he never heard. So he bought a camel for the journey and put his luggage on it, and traveled for a month until he arrived at the Levant. He went to ‘Abdullāh ibn Unays’ house and said to the doorman: “Jābir is here.” ‘Abdullāh ibn Unays asked: “Ibn Abdullāh?” Jābir said: 'Yes.' So Unays ran out quickly and they hugged each other. Jābir said to him: “I learnt that you heard a Hadīth from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) about recompense and I was worried you would die or I would before I heard it.” So he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘The people will be gathered on the Day of Judgment naked, uncircumcised and they will have nothing.’ This means that Allah will gather the people up on the Day of Judgment in one place, hold them accountable for their deeds, and either punish or reward them. At that time, they will be naked and uncircumcised, just as they were when their mothers gave birth to them, and they will have no worldly possessions. Then, he said: "Then an announcement will be made by one voice.” An announcement is only made by a voice, as people notice an announcement accompanied by sound. So ‘voice’ was mentioned here to emphasize the announcement. This is the highest level of clarity that Allah speaks, with speech that is heard and with a sound, however Allah’s sound does not resemble that of the creation. As for the sounds of the creation, only those close-by are able to hear their sounds. Allah’s voice does not resemble that of the creation and that is why he said those far, as well as those who are near will hear the sound. This characteristic is exclusive for Allah’s voice. In contrast, the sounds of His creation are only heard by the ones who are close by, depending on how loud the voice is. There are numerous texts that affirm this, for instance, Allah’s statements: {And their Lord called to them: "Did I not forbid you"} [Sūrat al-A‘rāf: 22] and Allah’s statement: {And We called him from the side of the mount at [his] right and brought him near, confiding [to him]} [Sūrat Maryam: 52] and Allah’s statement: {And [mention] when your Lord called Mūsa, [saying]: "Go to the wrongdoing people"} [Sūrat Ash-Shu‘āra’: 10]. Then He will say: “I am the King, I am the Recompenser.” The announcement that the people gathered on that day will hear; the ones who are far and close: “I am the King, I am the Recompenser.” Allah, the Exalted, is the King. He owns all that is in the heavens and earth. He is the Recompenser Who compensates the servants for their deeds, whoever does good, He will reward him with better than what he did; and whoever did bad deeds, He will give him what he deserves. Then Allah will say: "None of the people of Hell will enter Hell with a right over one of the people of Paradise until I settle his right. And none of the people of Paradise will enter Paradise owing a right to one of the people of Hell, until I offset his right, even if it was a slap (on the face).” Meaning: Allah, Exalted and Glorified, will judge between His servants with justice. He will take from the oppressor the right of the oppressed. None of the inhabitants of the Hellfire will enter it with a right to claim from the people of Paradise, except that Allah will settle this right. This is complete justice. Even though the disbelievers and the oppressors will enter the Hellfire, they will not be oppressed. If they had a right upon someone in the Paradise, they will receive it from them, and similarly is the case for the people of Paradise. So the Companions said to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): “How can the people give others their rights when they don’t have any worldly possessions?” The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By the good and bad deeds.” Meaning: The settlement of rights is done by the oppressed people taking good deeds from their oppressor and, if the good deeds of the oppressors run out, the bad deeds of the oppressed will be taken and added to the aggregate of bad deeds of the oppressor, and then he will be thrown into the Hellfire.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, the lowest place of any of you in Paradise will be that Allah will tell him to express his wish. He will wish and wish again. Allah will then ask him: 'Have you expressed your wish?' He will answer: 'Yes, I have.' Allah will say: 'You will have what you have wished for and the like thereof along with it.'"

The person who will have the lowest place in Paradise will be the one who will receive all of his wishes, such that none of his wishes will be left unfulfilled. Allah will say to him: "Wish for anything", so he will wish for everything he wants, until, when he had wished for everything he wants, Allah will say to him: Verily, you will receive that which you wished for and the like thereof', as an increase, blessing and generous gift from Allah, the Almighty.

If someone intends to do a good deed but was prevented by a valid excuse, he shall gain the reward of his intention.

Riyadh Al-Salheen with explanation and benefits

Variation of reward for good deeds is based on sincerity and following of the Prophet’s guidance. The more a person is sincere to Allah, and the keener he is on following the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), the more perfect his worship will be, and consequently his reward will be bigger.

People differ with regards to their acts of worship according to their intentions. The intentions of some people have reached the ultimate level of sincerity (to Allah) and keenness in following the Sunnah (of the Messenger of Allah) with regard to doing good and righteous deeds, while the intentions of others are below that.
